Hiking ZOMBIE Trail | A Missouri Winter Hike
#zombietrail #missourihiking #icewaterfall
Today I hike 11 miles on the Zombie Trail which is a hike close to St. Louis in Glencoe, Missouri. This was a beautiful and fun Missouri winter hike featuring a stunning ice waterfall. If you’re looking for a fun 10 mile St. Louis day hike the Zombie Trail is for you! Keep your eye out for mountain bikers as this trail was built by and made for them. Oh yeah, and zombies. Beware the ZOMBIES!!!
The Zombie Trail actually consists of two trails Zombie West and Zombie East to combine for a 9.7 mile loop trail in Sherman Beach Park a short drive from St. Louis. The two halves of Zombie Trail run along two ridges split by the Rock Hollow Greenway, a haunted trail with a sorted past, but more on that later. Officially named Bluff View Trail (but come on, Zombie Trail is waaaay better) was built by Gateway Off-Road Cyclists (GORC) between 2009-2018 primarily for mountain bikers which is easily noticeable with the banked curves and jumps, but can be enjoyed by hikers as well.
Why is it called the Zombie Trail?
Legends of the haunted gravel road that is now Rock Hollow Greenway stretch back to its construction in the 1860s as an access road to the Meramec River and the rail road track that runs along its bank. Ghosts of settlers struck by trains roaming the thickly wooded ridges and even a hidden cemetery for murdered children from an insane asylum run by sadists pepper local lore around this old road. These days though the trail and park is well maintained and full of hikers, mountain bikers, and nature lovers enjoying the beautiful Missouri outdoors.

The highlight of the Zombie Trail for hikers and mountain bikers alike has to be the cave-like rock overhang 5 miles in on Zombie West. In fact Zombie West has most of the highlights of the trail for hikers. Mountain bikers will like enjoy Zombie East for it’s multiple switchbacks and technical single track through the trees.
Overall Zombie Trail is a solid 10 mile hike close to St. Louis, zombie or not.
