My FAVORITE TRIP of the YEAR!!! I’m heading out on the ice of a frozen Lake Michigan for my annual winter cabin trip to Wilderness State Park in Northern Michigan. Nothing beats winter camping in Northern Michigan playing around on the ice and in the snow covered forest. It’s my 5th year heading up to Caps Cabin, our little Michigan log cabin, for a weekend of winter fun in Pure Michigan.

Wilderness State Park
Mackinaw City | Northern Michigan
Boasting 10,512 acres and 26 miles (42km) of Lake Michigan shoreline the park is a beautiful Michigan retreat.
Every year my good friends from Chicago and Ann Arbor head “up north” to what I call the Tip of the Mitten, Northern Michigan for a log weekend of winter camping fun in Wilderness State Park. Located 10 miles from Mackinac City and The Mighty Mac, the Mackinac Bridge, is clearly visible from shoreline of our cabin.
We always stay at Caps Cabin which is about a mile hike in from the parking lot so we have to use sleds to pack in all our food and fun for the weekend, but it’s well worth the hike to be steps from a frozen Lake Michigan.

Caps Cabin is a rustic Michigan log cabin that sleeps 8 people on simple bunk beds and is heated by a wood burning stove. It sounds cold, and cold weather sleeping bags are a must (I use a Teton Sports Lightweight 0 Degree Mummy Bag), but trust me when I tell you gets pretty toasty in the cabin with a good fire burning in the stove.
The cabin kept us warm, but the real reason we go is to play out in the Northern Michigan winter wonderland! There are plenty of winter activities you can do at Wilderness State Park including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, but our main fun comes from simply walking out on the ice and getting lost in the woods for a bit.
