Kid Friendly Missouri State Parks

Elephant Rocks State Park was one of the first Missouri State Parks people recommended to me when I started hiking in Missouri. I can absolutely see why! I wouldn’t necessarily classify the Braille Trail as a hike, but the whole park is a wonderful place to spend the day with the family. Just be sure to arrive early! Elephant Rocks opens at 8am. I was the first person in on a Wednesday morning, but it filled up quickly.

What are the Elephant Rocks?

Located in the St. Francois Mountains in southeast Missouri the Elephant Rocks are boulders of Graniteville Granite which were formed by volcanoes 1.4 billion years ago in the Proterozoic era. Millions of years of erosion exposed and shaped the reddish pink boulders into the configuration they are in today which resembles a line of circus elephants. The granite in the area has be quarried since 1869 with stones being used in buildings in St. Louis and as far away as Massachusetts and California. It’s kind of cool (and kind of sad) to see names of the workers chiseled into the stone from 100 years ago.
