Whispering Pines Trail Part II | North & South Loop

I’m back on the Whispering Pines Trail in Hawn State Park hiking the South Loop and the second half of the North Loop. The Whispering Pines South Loop is a roughly 6 miles extension of the trail. It’s a moderate mostly flat trail, an easy addition to add some miles to your hike. I recommend taking the Scenic Loop at the southernmost point of the South Loop as you’ll find beautiful rock outcroppings along Pickle Creek.

The South Loop basically doubles the length of the Whispering Pines Trail to 12.4 miles. If you don’t want to do that distance you can hike only the North Loop for a 6.3 mile day hike. For my legs the North Loop is the better all around trail. It has the best views and most elevation gain. But if you’ve got time and want to add the miles you won’t be disappointed with the South Loop, especially the scenic extension.

The best parts of the South Loop were the unexpected cliffside view of Pickle Creek. It came out of nowhere, but I was pleasantly surprised when I found the creek cutting through the valley. Further south on the trail there is a smaller extension called the Scenic Loop. Definitely check this out. It’s only 1 mile, but it takes you down spot in the creek with some beautiful rock outcroppings. There’s also what I imagine to be an unofficial campsite.

Overall I really enjoyed the Whispering Pines Trail at Hawn State Park. The distance and terrain, especially on the North Loop, make this hike well worth it. Whether you’re seeking a day hike or want to do some overnight backpacking, Whispering Pines is a great Missouri hiking trail!
