Filming Fail but Fun Hike on Labarque Hills Trail

About 30 minutes into our drive to Don Robinson State Park to hike the LaBarque Hills Trail I realized that I totally left my tripod at home. Epic face palm. But that didn’t stop Abby and I from having a great time on the trail experiencing this beautiful Missouri state park.

Type: Loop | Rate: Moderate | Traffic: Heavy

We went clockwise around the loop saving the lookout point for the end of our hike. Tbh the lookout wasn’t much of a lookout, but overall the trail is pretty great!

The first part of the trail is a lovely decent down to a creek. Two days prior to our hike the temperature dropped into the teens for a couple days so the creek was frozen over and icicles were clinging to the edges of springtime waterfalls. It made for a beautiful introduction to the trail. Then you get to decide if you’d like to left or right around the loop. You’ll notice the lookout point jetting out from the northern portion of the trail. Abby and I decided to save this spot for the end of our hike so we went left and hiked the loop clockwise.

I was expecting the trail to be similar to Sandstone Canyon which is on the east side of Don Robinson State Park. I was pleased to find out that Labarque Hills very much has it’s own vibe and distinct feel. The trail follow the creek for about a half mile as you begin to gain elevation and the trees are mostly evergreen until to you reach the trail’s highest point at 419 feet. Once atop the ridge you’ll notice that the park rangers have done a decent amount of work clearing the underbrush with makes for a nice open feeling hike.

Once again Don Robinson State Park did not disappoint. For a day hike close to St. Louis this Jefferson County, Missouri hike offers its own vibe separate from the other trail at Don Robinson. While we went in the winter and got to experience a frozen creek, I’m sure this trail really shines in the spring and summer months with all of its running water. We’re looking forward to going back! Tripod included.
