Meg Velius Returns to Climb Learning to Fly 5.10c
It was the third week of October and the St. Louis climbing crew made a return trip to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch for the start of the fall rock climbing season. We couldn’t have asked for more perfect conditions for a midwest climbing trip to Horseshoe Canyon Ranch.
The highlight of the trip for me was being able to film Meg Velius (@meg_V24) climb and send Learning to Fly 5.10c on the Prophecy Wall in the North Forty Routes. In June of 2023 on another HCR climbing trip Meg attempted to climb Learning to Fly making it to the crux of the route, which is the last clip to the chains. In that attempt she was just too pumped to send the route. Not this time.
Learning to Fly 5.10c is one of the premier sport climbing routes at Horseshoe Canyon Ranch ranking 3.5 stars on Mountain Project. The name of the route comes from the crux which is pulling the roof just before the chains. At this point in the climb the pump factor is real, and the fear factor is even more real as a fall at the crux makes for a serious whipper, hence Learning to Fly.
