Rock Climbing at Red Rock Canyon Las Vegas | Day 2
On our second day climbing at Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas we headed to the Second Pullout (Calico II) and hit up the Gallery wall and the famous Black Corridor. We pushed our grades having gotten used to the rock after Day 1 and played around mostly within the 5.10-5.11 range. Don’t worry, Ryan and Meg got on some stout routes too.
The Gallery
The Gallery wall is off the Second Pullout (Calico II) slightly further into the park. I should note that Red Rock Canyon park road is one-way, so once you’re in you have to drive the 13-mile loop. It’s a beautiful drive! Just be aware if you’re on a time crunch after climbing. It takes about 30min to drive.
Our warm-up route was Sport Climbing is Neither 5.8 (50ft, 15m) which is on the left side of The Gallery. There are 5 or 6 routes all right beside each other on this wall with the left most routes the easiest and getting more difficult as you move right. As we worked ourselves right we hit up Gelatin Pooch 5.10a (60ft, 18m) and Running Amuck 5.10c (60ft, 18m). Ryan tested himself on Yaak Crack 5.11c (70ft, 21m) which is a beautiful route, crimpy, and pumpy, and even took about a 20ft whipper from the top.
The Black Corridor
The second half of the day we headed to The Black Corridor to hit up some classic sport routes and find the shade. Possibly the most popular crag at Red Rock Canyon, The Black Corridor was simply stunning - red and black rock with routes through huge huecoes made for some amazing climbs.
Saturday afternoon is definitely a busy time in The Black Corridor. One of the locals lovingly referred to it as Las Vegas’s outdoor climbing gym. It was crowded for sure, but we were still able to get some climbs in without too much waiting. We stayed in the Lower Level climbing Bonaire 5.9 (80ft, 24m) on the left side from the entrance and Hips Don’t Lie (aka Punch Drunk) 5.11b/c (45ft, 14m) on the right. The left side of the lower level features tall (roughly 80ft) mostly 5.9 climbs with the right side covered in huecoes for some of the most spectacular 5.10-5.11 routes I’ve ever climbed.
